One-day hike "Fortress Embedded in the Mountains"

In the region of Kvemo-Kartli, amidst limestone cliffs, in the gorge of the Algeti River, there is a medieval fortress called Birtvisi (ბირთვისი). It is first mentioned in written sources as a possession of the Arab emir of Tbilisi, which was captured by Georgian nobles Liparit, Eristav Kldekari, and Ivan Abazasdze in 1038.

In medieval Georgia, Birtvisi had a reputation as an impregnable fortress, and its owner could control the entire strategic Algeti Gorge.

Timur Tamerlane was the only one to capture the fortress during one of his invasions of Georgia in 1403. It wasn't a direct assault; it was done through cunning and resourcefulness. One of his warriors climbed the sheer cliffs at night and lowered a rope ladder, allowing the others to enter the fortress. The entire garrison was wiped out.

Birtvisi is a large complex of fortifications in the limestone cliffs surrounding the 1 km diameter gorge. The fortress has several towers, the most famous of which is Sheupovari, standing on the highest rock.

Excursion program:

Total trail length: 7 km.
Total elevation gain: 340 m.
Highest point of the hike: 1145 m.
Trail difficulty: moderate, with some sections requiring mountaineering skills (not included in the standard hike plan).
By car: 130 km.

• Our trail leads through a magical forest, filled with the scent of moisture and mushrooms. The rocks, covered in fluffy green moss, resemble sleeping trolls. Gentle breezes lift fallen leaves, and chatty streams resemble conversations of forest spirits!
• We will reach a cozy meadow, listen to the sounds of the forest, and build a campfire. We'll enjoy delicious herbal tea and roast potatoes. We'll eat them hot, burning our tongues and getting messy, just like in childhood 😍
• But first, we'll explore the lower fortress, climb to Sheupovari and Birtvisi, examine the ancient structures, learn their history and legends, and savor breathtaking views!
• After a shared lunch, we'll continue along another equally interesting and picturesque trail that will lead us to the village of Amlevi. From there, we'll head back to Tbilisi.

• Personal utensils (cup, spoon, plate);
• Trekking poles (optional);

❗️Food - Bring your own according to your preferences.
❗️Water - Bring as needed, but no less than 1 liter.
❗️Avoid overloading your backpack with unnecessary items. Calculate the right amount of food and clothing. Food and equipment are not included in the tour price! Purchase food in advance!

❗️Tour Rules:

1. The tour is led by a guide (or guides).
2. During the tour, all participants obey the leader's instructions to ensure maximum safety, organization, and equal comfort for everyone.
3. It is prohibited to arrive at the meeting point in a state of alcohol intoxication. Participants may be excluded at the discretion of the guide.
4. Drinking alcoholic beverages in the car is not allowed during the journey.
5. The use of headphones is not allowed during walks.
6. Do not litter.
7. Do not pick flowers.
8. Animals are not allowed.
9. To avoid conflict situations during the hike, we avoid discussing topics such as a) politics, b) religion, c) football.
10. In case of force majeure situations, the guide reserves the right to change the course of the tour.
