One-day excursion "Two Capitals"

Everyone knows that the capital of Georgia is Tbilisi!

An ancient and beautiful city that has preserved its uniqueness and authenticity despite invasions, destruction, arson, and attempts at Sovietization. But not everyone is aware that just a 15-minute drive from Tbilisi lies the first capital of the Georgian state, the former capital back in the 3rd century BCE! More precisely, everyone knows that there is Mtskheta near Tbilisi, and it is a must-visit place, but what many don't realize is that Mtskheta is older than Tbilisi, and even the legions of Rome stood within its walls...

Our one-day excursion is dedicated to the two capitals of Georgia and, consequently, 2,500 years of the country's history. But... we won't reveal all the legends and hidden moments of this history here (come and listen), instead, we'll tell you about how our excursion will unfold.

Excursion program:

  • We will start the day in Abanotubani (the district of Sulfur Baths) and take a stroll along the Liagvi (Fig) River, passing by the Caravanserai, the minaret of the Tbilisi Mosque, and the baths themselves until we reach the Figs Gorge Waterfall. Then we'll meet Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of the city, near the walls of Metekhi, take the cable car with stunning views of the old town, the Mother of Georgia statue, and the Narikala Fortress. Our walk will continue along the narrow and steep Orpiri Street (Two Mouths) to Meidan Square and Meidan Bazaar, and then to Tbilisi Sioni Cathedral, where the residence of the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia is located. Next, we'll visit one of the oldest churches in Tbilisi, Anchiskhati (the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary), the Rezo Gabriadze Marionette Theater, Orbeliani Square and Market, and conclude the Tbilisi part of the excursion at the residence of the President of Georgia (former Palace of the Orbeliani Princes).
  • At the President's residence, we will be transported by vehicle to Jvari Monastery, where "...the Aragvi and Kura rivers merge, embracing each other like two sisters. There stood the monastery." After enjoying perhaps the best view of Mtskheta, we'll head for lunch. We have a wonderful restaurant on the banks of the Kura River with a magnificent view from the veranda and an equally remarkable cuisine.
  • And now, Mtskheta. Specifically, where our excursion will take place today, we will witness the history of the Middle Ages. In ancient times, this area was home to the residential buildings of the old capital. As for the Armazi Fortress (the name of this area in the 3rd century BCE), it is located on the right bank of the river and, unfortunately, it is not included in today's excursion. It requires a separate trip. We'll visit the majestic Svetitskhoveli Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles, the Jewel of Georgian Medieval Church Architecture. Numerous legends, stories, works of art, movies, and books are dedicated to this cathedral, including the famous "Hand of the Great Master" by Konstantine Gamsakhurdia (father of the first President of independent Georgia).
  • After visiting the Georgian holy site, we'll head to the remains of Bebris Tsikhe Fortress, which defended the northern borders of the city. Then, we'll proceed to the Samtavro Women's Monastery, another holy place. It is where Saint Nino, the enlightener of Georgia, arrived, and where King Mirian and his wife, who made Christianity the state religion of Georgia, rest in peace. Our journey continues to the Shio-Mgvime Monastery, located in a gorge not far from Mtskheta. It was founded by one of the 13 Assyrian fathers who brought monasticism to Georgia.
  • This concludes our excursion, and after taking a last look at the evening view of Mtskheta, we head back to Tbilisi.

However, if you still have energy, the soul craves celebration, and the stomach reminds you that a Georgian dinner is also a celebration, then a bonus awaits us—a magical winemaker! Amazing wines, unique infusions, and magical chacha (Georgian brandy) accompanied by homemade snacks and delightful humor... (option available for an additional fee and must be arranged in advance when booking).
